November 2018

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has mailed your new Medicare card – with your new Medicare number – and you should have received it by now.

If  you haven’t, call 1-800-MEDICARE or visit your  MyMedicare.gov account to find out more.  If you need help contacting Medicare, or with your Part D (Prescription Drug) plan for 2019, call the Senior Center at 815 943 2740 and make an appointment with one of our certified SHIP Counselors.

The Harvard Community Senior Center PEARLS Program is continuing to expand throughout Harvard and surrounding areas.

PEARLS serves individuals over age 60 and individuals of all ages with Epilepsy who suffer from Depression. This is a free, countywide, program led by the Harvard Community Senior Center to provide clinical depression treatment and medication management in the participant’s own home or other comfort setting.  The program is evidence based, runs for 19 weeks, and is funded by the McHenry County Mental Health Board, McHenry County Senior Services Commission and a McHenry County Community Development Block Grant.

PEARLS Referrals – Anyone can refer an Older Adult or individual with Epilepsy to the PEARLS program.  If you are concerned that someone you know is depressed, call 815-701-6605.  A trained social worker will respond and set up an initial assessment.

We celebrate and congratulate our new SHIP Counselor, Cynthia Sheppard!  Cynthia passed the test (Yaaaaay!) and so she is now officially certified to help seniors with their Medicare questions and concerns.  She is available from 3-6 on Monday or Thursday by appointment at the Harvard Community Senior Center.

Sharon Smith our current SHIP Counselor will be assisting seniors with their Medicare questions at two new donated senior satellite locations. First and third Monday of each month from 3-6 at Hebron United Methodist Church. Second and fourth Mondays she will be at senior satellite site 12555 Farm Hill Drive, Suite 800 in Huntley, IL.   A big thank you to the Hebron United Methodist Church and Independence Therapy, Inc. for allowing us to provide this much needed service in their space.  All appointments should be scheduled through Cynthia at the Harvard Community Senior Center (815-943-2740).

To which she would no doubt respond, GO SENIORS! Classes by Workplace Wellness Yoga, LLC Dorothy Robin strongly suggests seniors go to https://photos.app.goo.gl/zitbZFvynie9yFD56 This sequence is a ‘feel good’ way to start the day in bed or on the  floor, and to do before bedtime at night.  Note: always check with your doctor before practicing any new activity. In addition, if there’s a movement that you shouldn’t be making, or if  it hurts/is uncomfortable, don’t do it.
