Farmers Market Coupons – Going Going…. See if you qualify and HURRY coupons good only through the end of October!  We have several booklets of $25.00 left.Please check with our office staff for details for this wonderful program that allows Seniors to receive $25.00 to use at the participating summer/fall Farmer’s Markets.

Congregate Lunch gets a giant Thumbs Up and 5 star rating thanks to Maravela’s Catering & Banquets of Fox Lake, IL and their own Chef Spiro (if the Colonel cooked like Spiro, he would be a General)!  Chef Spiro helped to serve the lunch and he accepted the overflow of harvest veggies produced and donated by Harvard Community Garden (near our Harvard Diggins Library).  He vowed to create Briami (Greek Oven-Roasted Vegetables). Thank you Chef Spiro!

Thank you to Karin Swencki, Program Supervisor and Jonnelle Jannusch, Nutrition Site Coordinator for McHenry County Nutrition Services of the Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Chicago who provides and arranges meal delivery to Seniors throughout the Chicagoland area!  These wonderful ladies also accepted some of the Harvard Harvest of Veggies and shared with the McHenry Food Pantry!

On Saturday, September 15th from 7-10am the Harvard Community Senior Center will host their 1st Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser!  Tickets are $5.00 and all proceeds will go toward supporting our Senior Center!  All ages welcome! Menu includes: Pancakes, Eggs, Sausage, Juice and Coffee or Tea.  Get your day going with a yummy breakfast!

PEARLS 

The Harvard Community Senior Center PEARLS Program is continuing to expand throughout Harvard and surrounding areas.

PEARLS serves individuals over age 60 and individuals of all ages with Epilepsy who suffer from Depression. This is a free, countywide, program led by the Harvard Community Senior Center to provide clinical depression treatment and medication management in the participant’s own home or other comfort setting.  The program is evidence based, runs for 19 weeks, and is funded by the McHenry County Mental Health Board, McHenry County Senior Services Commission and a McHenry County Community Development Block Grant.  

 PEARLS Referrals – Anyone can refer an Older Adult or individual with Epilepsy to the PEARLS program.  If you are concerned that someone you know is depressed, call 815-701-6605.  A trained social worker will respond and set up an initial assessment.

Whole Body Approach to Disease Prevention – Food Pantry Clients ONLY

Join the McHenry County Health Department and Northern Illinois Food Bank for a 10 week class that will give you the tools you need to make positive changes in your lifestyle.  Classes are FREE and will be held on Monday’s from 6-7:30pm at the Harvard Food Pantry, 6817 Harvard Hills Rd, Harvard IL 60033

Current Events and More

Bev is truly an outstanding volunteer who is always willing to help in whatever capacity is needed!  She has led the pack in walking, she gardens, she cleans, she calls bingo, she decorates, she works on Tuesday’s at the Food Pantry, she delivers our Newsletter and Calendars to the Library.  She is always kind and cheery. We LOVE our Bev!!!

Yoga, Walking & Swimming updates

Come walk on Monday and/or Thursday mornings 8:30am here at the Senior Center for a 10-30 minute walk.  We are open to new or additional time-frames and welcome your input!

Swim and Trim was a huge hit!  The City of Harvard is checking to see if instructor Deb Waldo can continue classes at a local indoor pool, we will keep you posted.

YOGA!  Classes by Workplace Wellness Yoga, LLC

A personal note from our beloved Yoga Instructor Dorothy Robins, she states, “Our seniors are GREAT. I highly value time with them on Mondays. Thanks so much for the opportunity to share the stretching, strengthening, and balance improvement with them. As I told you, I’m proud of them for practicing self care on a regular basis.”

Thank you to MASTER GARDENER, Tom Jaszczak has been stopping by on Monday to help us with our garden beds!  Tom put us in touch with Illinois Extension College of Agricultural, Consumer & Environmental Sciences. We will host a Program on “Seasons of the Garden” and will be covering a variety of topics.

Plates, napkins, cups, plastic wear, food items that we can stretch to last such as trial mixes, popcorn, package cookies, water, and any other drink items you are willing to donate are greatly appreciated.

Buy a Brick ( The Senior Advisory Council is sponsoring a Buy A Brick program to help with the Senior Center’s required portion of the parking lot project.   The project will cost approximately $70,000, with about $66,000 coming from 2 community development block grants, corporate & community donations, the Food Pantry, and the city of Harvard.  We hope to raise several thousand dollars to help with the costs and, any extra funds would be allocated to other facility projects the SAC would recommend to the Board of Directors. Please consider showing your support by buying a 12 x 12 brick with your name that will be installed in the paved area along the walkway/garden path from the new parking lot.  More details to follow.
